Case Study: System Consolidation saves $3.9 million

 OPPORTUNITY
Corporate merger of two disparate systems and philosophies introduced a whole new set of system integration challenges. One company was a wholly in-sourced and centralized operation for all of its B2B transaction, translation and transmission processing. The other company was completely outsourced. The combined companies evaluated the merits and cost savings of both solutions and determined that the internal cost saving and controls already in place would be the best alternative for the entire company. By moving the entire company's EC/ B2B services in house, the company would be able to save $3.9 million annually while improving data continuity and control.

 HISTORY
One company had outsourced their B2B System to a third party value-added network (VAN). This system was divided into two theatres of operations. One was operated in the U.S. and the other in Europe. The subordinate systems were centrally located, but the entire system ran on two different architectures, that were completely different from the principal company. The major obstacles to overcome were the migration of the translation application and the migration to a standardized operating environment. Each system was architecturally dissimilar, and the integration, support and administrative practices were equally disparate. In addition, the in-house systems needed to be significantly upgraded.

 OBSTACLES
Systems needed to be consolidated on a standardized architecture, while upgrading and migrating three different infrastructures across three continents. The consolidation of products, applications and initiatives were in a constant state of change. New business applications and the consolidation of the two companies and systems impacted the system migration. The migration was also hampered by the addition of numerous interface and application design changes. New software bugs and software scaling limitation and dissimilar support practices. This required a high level of commitment and support from the migration team.

 SOLUTION
The systems were consolidated on the GENTRAN:Server for Unix platform using the original customized GXS maps. This platform standardized the data traffic and support processes under a common environment. This solution minimized the cost to redevelop legacy maps while standardizing the architecture at the same time. It also leveraged existing design and code, which expedited the migration process. The solution resulted in saving of $3.9 million annually with a rapid, cost effective implementation strategy.
