August 2004EC Power Implements New Transaction Protocols in ERCOT
The most extensive upgrade to electronic transactions in the ERCOT market was completed on August 1, 2004. Eighty-six (86) competitive retailers tested over 28 thousand transactions with 8 distribution companies to ensure the upgrade would be successful. Over the last 10 weeks, the test flight included market participants successfully completing hundreds of test scenarios simulating market transactions.
EC Power upgraded 10 electronic transactions to meet new market requirements that were designed to allow multiple customer enrollment transactions for individual electricity accounts. For example, the new transaction stacking capabilities allow the market to handle a tenant move-out of an apartment and a new tenant move-in into same apartment without having to wait until all move-out transactions completed. The market enhancements will greatly increase the efficiency and reliability of customer enrollment transaction management.
Jennifer Teel, Co-Chair of Texas Test Plan Team, acknowledges, "The team worked extremely hard to develop over 40 test scripts simulating real market transactions between competitive retailers, transmission distribution companies, and ERCOT. The hard work, dedication, and high level of co-operation resulted in a successful implementation that greatly enhances the markets ability to handle complex business scenarios." The Texas Test Plan Team is made up of all market participants and is a sub-committee of ERCOT's Retail Market Services.
Glen Wingerd, ERCOT's Flight 0504 Administrator, commented, "This was the most extensive test flight to date and comparatively was 130 percent larger than the market open flight. I personally want to thank all of the market participants and the ERCOT team for their dedication to a successful flight. Congratulations on a job well done."
The ERCOT Market continues to attract new competitive retailers in both the commercial and industrial segment, as well as the mass residential segment. Electricity consumers have enjoyed large savings by switching electricity service providers. The switch rates have been greater in the commercial and industrial segment as many businesses see electricity savings flow directly to the bottom line. Competitive retailers focused on large commercial and industrial customers with few accounts benefit from this enhancement by better control of their actual switch dates. Competitive retailers focused on mass-market customers with a large number of accounts benefit from this enhancement by better control of customer switching. Whatever the competitive retailer's market segment, ERCOT continues to enhance the market to improve efficiency and reliability of transaction management.
As the largest 3rd party transaction service provider in Texas, processing 20% of the transactions in the Texas market, EC Power handles transactions for 18 current Competitive Retailer's varying in size from niche C&I specific clients to large volume residential focused clients. With active participation in the RMS work groups and a proven testing methodology, EC Power continues to support it's competitive retailers thru each Flight.
